Alright lads, let’s break down this Round of 16 tie between defending champions Argentina and Egypt, kicking off at midnight our time in Atlanta.
Let’s start with the facts we know for sure. Argentina topped Group J with three wins from three, scoring eight and conceding just one, then they dug deep to beat Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in the last round. They’ve got quality all over the pitch — Messi pulling the strings up front, Enzo and Mac Allister running the midfield, and plenty of options off the bench. The only knock is that extra time clash will have taken a bit of zip out of their older players later in the game.
Egypt made history by getting to the last 16 for the first time ever. They finished second in Group G unbeaten, then held Australia to 1-1 after 120 minutes and won it on penalties. Salah is their main man by a mile, but most of the rest of the squad plays domestic football back home, and the extra time and penalty shootout will have drained them. They’ll sit deep and look to counter, but they don’t have much depth to keep that up for 90 minutes.
We know Argentina won the only senior friendly between the two sides 2-0 back in 2008, and they’ve won every World Cup game they’ve played against African nations. The quality gap is clear. Argentina should control the game and create chances on a regular basis, and Egypt will struggle to hold them off for the full 90. I’m backing Argentina -1.25 for this one.
