World Cup Closing Ceremony: Tom Cruise Makes a Surprise Appearance

Tom Cruise to join star-studded 2026 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony - ABC News

Appearing before the final kickoff

FIFA stated that the closing ceremony will take place before the final match kicks off and will be themed "Celebrating the unforgettable journey of 48 participating teams across 16 host cities and three host nations," reviewing the wonderful journey of this World Cup through music, culture, and football.

In addition to Tom Cruise, popular internet streamer IShowSpeed will also participate in the performance. Other performing guests include Italian singer Laura Pausini, American singer and actress Nicole Scherzinger, and British singer Robbie Williams. American singer Jennifer Hudson, who holds the prestigious "EGOT" status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards), will sing the US national anthem before the final.

World Cup Chief Operating Officer Shierji stated that the closing ceremony will extend the spirit of welcoming global fans from the opening ceremony, connecting the entire tournament with music, culture, and football to present a grand finale performance before the champion is crowned. FIFA urges ticket-holding fans to enter the stadium early and notes that the live audience will have the opportunity to interact and participate in the performance.

A Controversial World Cup Halftime Show: Justin Bieber Intervenes at the Last Minute with a Shocking Addition

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated on July 13 that a concert will be held during the final's halftime interval, aiming to create a grand spectacle for billions of viewers worldwide. This will mark a historic first in World Cup history.

The performance lineup is star-studded, gathering massive icons from the global music industry. It includes Canadian singer Justin Bieber, American pop queen Madonna, Colombian singer Shakira, South Korean group BTS, Nigerian singer Burna Boy, and Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The artistic director role is held by Chris Martin, the lead singer of the British band Coldplay. FIFA stated that it does not rule out inviting more guests to perform at the last minute based on the final lineup of the competing teams. To avoid disrupting the match, the performance time will be strictly controlled within 11 minutes to preserve the traditional 15-minute halftime interval of football matches as much as possible. This is also a response to previous external criticisms concerning the excessively long halftime show performance at the FIFA Club World Cup, which potentially disrupted players' match conditions. FIFA emphasized that the stage assembly and removal processes have been optimized to ensure the match can resume on time.

However, this American-flavored halftime show has also sparked controversy. Football regulations state that the halftime interval must not exceed 15 minutes. FIFA's implementation of a mandatory 3-minute cooling break in both the first and second halves during this World Cup had already caused dissatisfaction among fans inside and outside the stadiums, and this latest move has raised further concerns among football purists. Notably, this is not the first time FIFA has altered the halftime interval; as early as the summer of 2025 during the FIFA Club World Cup final, Infantino extended the halftime rest period to 25 minutes to accommodate the halftime show performance smoothly.

Spain vs. Argentina: The Cancelled Finalissima Finally Takes Stage in the World Cup Final

Spain and Argentina were originally scheduled to play an official match in Qatar during the March international break this year—the Finalissima—a top-tier competition jointly organized by UEFA and CONMEBOL. Its goal was to bridge the football cultures of the two continents and present the highest level of football confrontation to the audience. This competition originated in 1985 when it was held for the first time, was suspended for nearly thirty years after 1993, and was resurrected only in 2022 to be held every four years, specifically to let the champions of Europe and South America battle it out. When it was held for the first time after its revival in 2022, Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in London to capture the trophy.

On March 15, 2026, UEFA issued an official announcement explicitly stating that the Finalissima match originally scheduled for March 27 in Qatar was completely cancelled due to geopolitical conflicts. This news shocked football fans worldwide; the match was supposed to be a heavyweight showdown between 2024 European Championship winners Spain and 2024 Copa América champions Argentina. Its failure to take place on time became a lingering regret for many fans. Now, as both sides advance to the World Cup final, this thrilling pinnacle matchup between their respective continental champions finally redeems that regret for countless fans.

19-Year-Old Yamal and 39-Year-Old Messi: Meeting in the World Cup Final from a Bathtub

A photo from 19 years ago has once again sparked heated discussions among global football fans due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the photo, a mere 20-year-old Argentine football icon Lionel Messi is carefully bathing a baby. This very baby boy is none other than Spain's 19-year-old rising star Lamine Yamal, who is currently taking the football world by storm. With Argentina now set to face Spain in the World Cup final, this match has been colorfully dubbed the "Bathtub Battle" by fans.

The remarkable story of Lionel Messi's meeting with a baby Lamine Yamal - The Athletic

The classic bathing photo of Messi and Yamal was taken in December 2007. At that time, Messi was just beginning to make a name for himself at Barcelona. He was invited to participate in a charity calendar photoshoot jointly organized by the Barcelona Foundation, UNICEF, and the Spanish newspaper SPORT, posing alongside Yamal, who was only 5 months old at the time. The initiative aimed to promote child welfare and the importance of family care. No one could have predicted that this purely coincidental charity event would become one of the most talked-about photographs in football history decades later.

According to past reports by European media, the photographer responsible for the shoot, Joan Monfort, recalled that Messi was extremely shy back then and had no prior experience handling infants. As a result, he appeared quite nervous during the shoot, unsure of how to bathe the baby. It was only with the assistance of staff members and Yamal's mother that the shoot was successfully completed.

Fast forward to the 2026 World Cup stage, the 39-year-old Messi has become a six-time tournament veteran. He has guided Argentina all the way to the final, fighting to become the first team in 64 years to successfully defend their World Cup title. Standing in his path is Yamal, whom he personally bathed all those years ago. The 19-year-old Yamal has led Spain on a staggering 37-match unbeaten streak. This "Bathtub Battle" is rich with storytelling, and this legendary clash of generations has fans buzzing with anticipation.

A Single Match Deciding This Year's Ballon d'Or? Messi Winning His Ninth Ballon d'Or?

With Lautaro Martínez scoring the match-winning goal, the probabilities for this year's Ballon d'Or selection have officially undergone a major shift, with Messi surpassing Yamal, Kane, and Dembélé to claim the top spot.

The Ballon d'Or official channels updated their article again, interpreting the relationship between the Ballon d'Or winner and the World Cup champion. In a World Cup year, must the Ballon d'Or winner be a member of the World Cup-winning squad? Today, the Ballon d'Or official channels provided the answer: since the selection criteria expanded globally in 1995, only 57% of Ballon d'Or winners have been the World Cup champions of that same year. Bobby Charlton (1966), Paolo Rossi (1982), and Lothar Matthäus (1990) all won both the World Cup and the Ballon d'Or in the same year. However, since 1995, when the selection expanded globally and was no longer restricted to European players, the success rate dropped to just 57%! In 1998, Zinedine Zidane lifted the Ballon d'Or shortly after convincingly winning the World Cup on home soil. Four years later, Ronaldo repeated the feat after winning the tournament with Brazil. This pattern held true for two consecutive editions. In 2006, Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro was crowned.

owever, this rule came to an end after that.

In 2010, Messi edged out his Barcelona teammates Andrés Iniesta and Xavi to win the Ballon d'Or, despite the latter duo winning the World Cup.In 2014, Cristiano Ronaldo defeated Messi and members of the champion German team, Manuel Neuer, in identical fashion. In 2018, Luka Modrić, who led Croatia to a runner-up finish, finished ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and champion French squad member Antoine Griezmann. It wasn't until the most recent World Cup that a world champion won the Ballon d'Or again, when Messi claimed the 2023 Ballon d'Or after leading Argentina to the title. Yet, since 1995, only four out of seven players have achieved this (accounting for 57%). Yes, winning the World Cup certainly helps, but it does not guarantee that you will lift the Ballon d'Or. To win it, you need to be the best player over the entire season, not just the best player of the World Cup.
