Fabrizio Romano shared updates on the progress of Manchester City’s negotiations with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernández on his podcast channel.

This is Enzo Fernández’s night. Everyone is making phone calls and sending text messages, trying to figure out when a decision will be made. I do not believe an agreement will be reached tonight. It is nearly 1 a.m. Italian time (September 1st). No breakthrough has been made in the negotiations, yet the two sides are moving closer to consensus, with Manchester City and Chelsea edging towards common ground.
The decision‑making power now lies with Chelsea. As I have been saying, Chelsea has repeatedly stressed in recent days that they must receive an appropriate transfer fee. In addition, they need to consider possibilities for reinforcing their own squad. Throughout Enzo’s transfer saga, Chelsea want to avoid the awkward situation of losing a top‑tier player without a suitable replacement and suffering squad problems as a result. For Chelsea, it is critical to find a player to ensure squad strength is improved before the transfer window closes.
Manchester City have now stepped in officially and begun direct club‑to‑club talks with Chelsea. For the past few weeks, we kept saying “Manchester City have not made an offer, Manchester City have not opened negotiations…” — all of those statements are no longer valid. Manchester City are negotiating, Chelsea are in dialogue with Manchester City, and the core sticking point is the transfer fee.
From what I understand, Enzo Fernández himself is also pushing for the transfer. He has told Chelsea he wants to join Manchester City and has agreed personal terms with the club. Now the final decision rests entirely with Chelsea.
