German media outlet BILD's sports/society department has provided an update on Jamal Musiala's medical condition.

Bayern Munich lined up without Jamal Musiala in their Supercup clash against Borussia Dortmund. Musiala was given a rest after collapsing on the pitch twice within just three days. The first incident occurred on Saturday against RB Leipzig (3-1), and the second took place on Tuesday during a friendly against 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim (4-2).

These two incidents sent shockwaves through German football: an exceptionally gifted young player in his absolute prime suddenly collapsing on the pitch—not once, but twice. Although he quickly recovered on both occasions, he remained visibly unsteady on his feet as he was assisted off the pitch.

Nonetheless, it is not entirely out of the question for Musiala to rejoin the squad for Friday's league opener, where defending champions Bayern Munich take on VfB Stuttgart. Even if he does not feature in the opening round, a return in the near future is virtually guaranteed.

Will Musiala Make the League Opener Against Stuttgart?

Musiala himself has publicly stated that his condition manifests as "brief but easily treatable absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction." This issue is certainly not unfamiliar to Musiala.

"We have known about it since last season," confirmed sporting director Max Eberl (52). His teammates were also well aware, which explains their immediate reaction when Musiala collapsed: they rushed over to his side right away. In the match against Heidenheim, they formed a protective ring around him while he lay on the ground.

Just as Musiala indicated, his condition is straightforward to manage—which suggests he will not be sidelined for long.

Eberl (52) explained the underlying reason for the two collapses: “The dosage of the medication he is supposed to take was tapered down. That is why his seizures became more pronounced within such a short timeframe, but it never posed a threat to his overall health. The priority now is readjusting his medication to bring him back to his previous baseline—a state where he had gone a very long time without experiencing any seizures.”

In other words: once the medical calibration is complete and Musiala's dosage is properly stabilized, he will no longer suffer pitch collapses.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Kleinschnitz (52), Director of the Department of Neurology at Essen University Hospital, corroborated this assessment.

“You cannot abruptly discontinue anti-epileptic medication. It requires gradually tapering down the dose of the previous drug while simultaneously ramping up the dosage of the new one. During this transitional window, seizures can occur more frequently because the replacement medication has not yet reached its full therapeutic efficacy.”

There can be multiple reasons for switching medication. Prof. Kleinschnitz noted: “The current drug may have lost its effectiveness, or the side effects may be too burdensome—such as dizziness, fatigue, and difficulties with concentration or memory. Weight gain is also a possible contributing factor.”

Musiala was rested for the Supercup against Dortmund. Moving forward, Bayern Munich's No. 10 plans to make his return to competitive football. In his statement, Musiala further clarified that after thorough consultations with neurologists and FC Bayern Munich, he intends to continue playing as normal, as medical specialists have concluded it involves no health risks.

One person placing immense faith in Musiala and eagerly anticipating his quick return is head coach Vincent Kompany (40). The manager believes the German international has already reclaimed the peak physical condition he enjoyed prior to his devastating injury over a year ago. On July 6, 2025, during the FIFA Club World Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Musiala suffered severe multiple injuries, including a fractured fibula.

"I know he has made massive strides in his form and fitness this summer. Just look at the minutes he played. His performance was not only on par with our best players, but arguably even better. We hadn't seen Jamal in this kind of shape since his injury against Paris Saint-Germain. I feel he has fully recovered all the necessary attributes to take on every single challenge on the pitch."
