Booed at Home: The Repeatedly‑Injured Frenkie de Jong Is Gradually Becoming a Problem for Barcelona

Last Wednesday, Barcelona players were presented in front of fans during the Joan Gamper Trophy celebrations. It was a very special moment. Before kick‑off, players walked onto the pitch one by one to greet supporters. Everyone received a warm welcome, especially the team’s leading figures and new signing Rodri.

However, for one player, the situation was completely different.

When Frenkie de Jong stepped onto the pitch, there was sparse applause mixed with boos. The Spotify Camp Nou delivered its verdict on the Dutch star. Nobody was surprised; many had anticipated the fans’ reaction following the recent string of incidents.

This situation is starting to deteriorate inside the club, as it has emerged that similar episodes have happened to Frenkie de Jong before.

Injury Troubles

The latest trigger was the injury he sustained while representing the Netherlands at the World Cup. At that time, he chose to play through the pain instead of resting. After the Netherlands were eliminated, he did not return to Barcelona immediately and instead went on holiday.

Only after the club sent urgent pressure did he report to the training complex. Examinations confirmed the severity of his injury.

Conservative Treatment

Then came the choice of treatment. Rather than undergoing surgery as most doctors recommended, Frenkie de Jong opted for conservative treatment, an approach unlikely to deliver a genuine recovery.

The most probable outcome is that after two months of conservative treatment, Frenkie de Jong will ultimately require surgery and miss half the season directly. The club is quite dissatisfied with his decision.

Controversial Remarks

Frenkie de Jong grew angry over rumours surrounding him and decided to speak out, criticising sections of the media. Yet his unsolicited intervention only poured fuel on the fire, as not everything he said was factual, alienating parts of the press.

Meanwhile, his full comments were never made public. As a consequence, he lost his captain’s armband. Hansi Flick put it diplomatically in public, stating the decision stemmed from the player’s injury status.

While that is true, the captaincy could have been retained had the head coach wished to do so, yet the timing was far from ideal. Reports indicate that despite his measured public comments, Hansi Flick holds private grievances towards the player.

Uncertain Future

No‑one knows how this saga will unfold. Bear in mind the Dutch midfielder only signed a new contract last season. Nevertheless, voices are growing within the club suggesting selling him would be the best course of action.

Any deal remains complicated for now given Frenkie de Jong’s ongoing injury. Yet if tensions fail to ease by the winter transfer window, no option can be ruled out.

Attention will also fall on the dressing‑room’s response during the upcoming captaincy vote.
