According to reports from the Daily Mail, the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina has been rated as the highest-risk fixture of the ongoing tournament through a joint assessment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), tournament officials and local police forces.

A comprehensive set of rigorous security measures will be implemented in Atlanta, including separate entry channels for fans of both teams, though no physical segregation zones will be installed inside the stadium. The FBI, FIFA and local police held a joint meeting this Monday, focusing on the profound historical grievances between the two nations and voicing concerns over potential fan conflicts.

While authorities will make every effort to separate supporters, officials admit that on-site security measures are limited due to FIFA regulations prohibiting internal stadium segregation. Consequently, corridors and public areas where fans are highly likely to mix will become the top priority of security deployment.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has called for calm from all parties. Notably, Argentine players have repeatedly chanted songs referencing the Falkland Islands during their World Cup campaign. The 1982 Falklands War claimed 907 lives and ended with the United Kingdom reaffirming its sovereignty over the islands. This week, Argentina’s Foreign Minister reiterated the country’s territorial claim over the Falklands, which was swiftly rejected by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Scaloni stated: “I want to tell all Argentine people that this is only a football match. We are facing a great team with an excellent coach, but at the end of the day, it is nothing more than a football game.”

English fans traveling to Atlanta for Wednesday’s semi-final will experience unprecedented tight security for this high-stakes derby. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford shared a similar view.

“This is just a football match. Two groups of passionate fans coming to watch a top-level game — that is the beauty of football. It unites fans, and both sides play with immense pride. Let football do the talking,” Pickford said.

Heavy police forces will be deployed outside the hotels where both teams are staying, and the surroundings of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where massive fan gatherings are expected, will serve as core security zones. England’s previous World Cup matches in the United States have felt like home fixtures, yet the atmosphere in Atlanta will be vastly different from their game against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Georgia.

The United States hosts a large Argentine diaspora, with thousands of Argentine fans set to travel from Florida to attend the match. Officials estimate a roughly 50-50 split of supporters inside the stadium, though English fans may be numerically outnumbered in downtown Atlanta.

As previously reported by the Daily Mail Sports, the number of street patrol officers will be significantly increased. Additionally, fan carnival events broadcasting the France vs Spain fixture on Tuesday will also be under key security surveillance.
