Cristiano Ronaldo: Those Who Support Portugal Will Always Stand By Me, Everything Else Is Rubbish

Reporter:

You are one of the most famous people on the planet, constantly surrounded by bodyguards and journalists in daily life. Especially during the World Cup, there are so many fans as you just mentioned. I would like to know, tonight when the room lights go out and you are left alone with your thoughts — knowing tomorrow will be a decisive day for Portugal, the national team and yourself personally — do you sometimes still think about that young boy who grew up in Funchal? Or do the heavy sense of responsibility, alongside the expectations and emotions of millions of people across the world, flood your mind?

Cristiano Ronaldo:

That feeling is almost always the same. To represent your country and fight for victories for your nation will always fill me with immense passion.

It feels just like my very first match every single time. Every time I step onto the pitch, it’s as if it’s my debut game. I simply want to savour every moment, and I believe these are the things that leave lasting memories. As I’ve said before, one standout feature of this World Cup is the passion of the people. It’s not only our own passion for competing at a tournament of this scale, but also the passion of the supporters. For instance, this morning at breakfast I met fans from Venezuela and Colombia who shared their stories with me. Seeing many of them looking at you with tears in their eyes, overcome with emotion — that is what truly matters. These are the moments life leaves you to cherish.

As for everything else… well, we have reached this stage, and it’s wonderful. Everyone wants to win, yet only one side can come out victorious in the end.

We must live through and embrace these experiences, for they are the memories that endure long after the final whistle. Beyond spectacular matches and goals — I am already 41 years old, what more do I need to prove? Frankly speaking, none of that matters anymore. What I will treasure and carry home with me is the love people hold for this national team, and for me in particular.

Building on that passion you spoke of, what message would you like to send to all Portuguese people scattered across every corner of the globe? Additionally, how do you cope with the constant doubts and criticism surrounding your starting place in the line-up?

Cristiano Ronaldo:

For the past 23 years, people have been trying to “take me down”. But I think you all realise by now that it is not worth the effort; it is a complete waste of time. There is no point to it. You have tried time and time again, over and over, yet it truly accomplishes nothing. I have grown entirely accustomed to it. Some people admire me more, others less, and that is all part of the journey. Naturally, I have my own preferences too.

What was your other question again?

Reporter:

The message you wish to share with the Portuguese people.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Oh right, my message to Portuguese people. Whether they remain in Portugal or have travelled here for the tournament, they are loyal supporters who never miss a chance to back us. They always stand with the team, and they always stand with me. As for everything else out there… it is all rubbish, completely irrelevant.
